This toll gate, with its cottage for the gatekeeper, stood on the Watling Street south of Dunstable until it was demolished around 1880. The money collected from travellers paid for repairs to the road. This photo is from a painting created by the father of E.J. "Mayor" Holt of Houghton Regis.
